Stimulation is key, possible identification of Sensory versus motor roots which ultimately comes down to latency and reflex arc. Sensory root has a longer latency because of ascending into spinal cord, traversing interneurons and then descending response. It's a milliseconds thing.

tEMG is extremely important, to find threshold of responses which are likely at or below 10 mA. Responses observed are more accurate when the root is lifted in the field and completely dry so there is no shunting.
